Teak tree (Tectona grandis)

Teak (Tectona grandis) is a large, deciduous tree that is dominant in mixed hardwood forests. It has small, fragrant white flowers and papery leaves that are often hairy on the lower surface.

Teak is the most valuable of all known timbers. For use in tropical countries it has no equal, and for certain purposes it is preferable to other woods in temperate climates also.

It’s Price is higher than that of any other timber, except mahogany. Great efforts have been made to find substitutes but no timber has brought to market in sufficient quantities combining the many valuable qualities which teak possesses.

  • Growth of Investment starts immediately.
  • Teak is a perfect investment that hedges against the falling US dollar.
  • Timber investments have outperformed all major stock indexes during the past 25 years .
  • Elgon Teak is the natural teak found in Kenya. Most teak is harvested and flown/shipped directly from forests in DRC, South Sudan and Asia to markets in Europe.
  • Tectona Grandis is the senior teak variety which we import and carefully seed with our seeding partners, Africa Gospel Church -Agro (Langata Rd).
  • Seedlings are available from the church Agro division at a low cost of only Ksh. 500/- per seedling.
  • Slow growing. Teak develops immense density from year 10, which is resistant to salt and naturally oily, hence highly valued in the maritime, air and high value furnishings.
  • Start-up Teak plantations are marketed at over GBP 25,000 in many parts of Europe & Asia per 100 trees.
  • A mature teak can achieve market value of over US$ 20,000 from approximately 25 years of age.
  • You however start earning from crop thinning from year 11. Crop thinning means out of 800 trees planted, only approx 100 may see 25 years, as you need to keep reducing the trees to allow the strong ones to continue growth. The thinned out trees will earn you KES 10,000 to KES 500,000/- per tree depending on the age.

Facts on Teak

Of all the tropical hardwood species – perhaps all tree species – teak exudes a particular fascination somewhat like gold among the precious metals. Valued for more than 2,000 years as an extraordinarily durable building timber in its native range in Asia, teak is now coveted worldwide. It’s extremely good dimensional stability and aesthetic qualities have led its use in shipbuilding, fine furniture, door and window frames and any other applications that require strong durable and stable wood.
